Dr Stephen Owens is a Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. He has a special interest in tropical diseases and outbreak response.
He is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Associate Fellow at Newcastle University.
Dr Owens graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1998 and undertook general professional training in paediatrics in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
After several years studying and researching tropical paediatrics in Liverpool, London and The Gambia, he went on to complete higher clinical training in Newcastle in 2013, specialising in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology.
Dr Owens joined the team at the Great North Children’s Hospital as a Consultant in 2016. His clinical responsibilities include looking after children with unusual or severe infections including tuberculosis and those with primary immune-deficiencies, some of whom are undergoing stem cell transplantation.
He is Newcastle lead for the “Scottish Paediatric and Adolescent Infection and Immunology National Managed Clinical Network” and takes part in joint clinics in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
He also supervises postgraduate clinical training of paediatricians on behalf of the RCPCH and serves as a Clinical Lead to the UK Government’s Emergency Medical Team (outbreak response).
Research
Dr Owens supports the research activities of the Children’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and supervises Newcastle medical students undertaking global health research projects overseas.
