Dr Shan Ellawela completed his specialist training in Neurology and Epilepsy at the institute of Neurological sciences, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow and was appointed as a consultant neurologist with a specialist interest in epilepsy in 2015.
He is the clinical lead for the regional epilepsy service, which provides a comprehensive and a multi-faceted epilepsy service, to patients in the North East region.
He has a special interest in drug refractory complex epilepsy and is the lead Neurologist in the epilepsy surgical programme.
He conducts weekly clinics for complex epilepsy and first seizures and also regular transition clinics for young people with epilepsy, and a monthly joint epilepsy surgical clinic.
He is also the local principal investigator of a number of national and international clinical trials.
