Dr Philip Atherton is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Freeman Hospital’s Northern Centre for Cancer Care where he specialises in thoracic (including lung) and gastro-intestinal (including oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, biliary tract, colon and rectum) cancers.
Having qualified at Guy’s Hospital, London in 1985, Dr Atherton trained in General Medicine and Clinical Oncology in Birmingham and Manchester. He spent three years on a Clinical Research Fellowship in Birmingham before taking up his present Consultant post in Clinical Oncology in 1999.
Dr Atherton’s areas of sub-specialisation are the treatment of lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies and gastro-intestinal tumours. This involves administration of both chemo- and radiotherapy.
Research
Interests include Research and Radiotherapy Technology Development. Dr Atherton is Clinical Lead for IGRT, and is involved with the development of SABR/SBRT and SIRT treatment for liver tumours.
