Dr Peter Carey is a Consultant Haematologist specialising in diagnostic haematopathology, paediatric haematology and haemoglobinopathy.
Dr Carey qualified in Newcastle. After postgraduate training and research at Addenbrookes’ Hospital in Cambridge and in Newcastle he worked as a consultant haematologist as Sunderland for 15 years before moving back to the RVI in 2006. His sub-specialist interests are diagnostic haematopathology, paediatric haematology and haemoglobinopathy. He is the lead clinician for the North of England Haematological Oncology Diagnostic Service (NEHODS) and since 2015 his clinical practice has been entirely within laboratory diagnostic haematopathology.
Publications
Dr Carey has published over 50 papers and book chapters in various fields including leukaemia, lymphoma, bone marrow transplantation, haematological adverse drug reactions, diagnostic haematopathology, haemoglobinopathy, and the provision of haematological services in Low to Middle Income Countries.
He is an RCPath examiner and between 2015-18 was the lead examiner for the final FRCPath morphology examination. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for the UK National External Quality Assessment (NEQAS) scheme board.
