Dr Paula Mulvenna is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Freeman Hospital’s Northern Centre for Cancer Care specialising in cancers of the lung and pleura, with a specific interest in the management of brain metastases.
Dr Mulvenna is one of the few clinicians in the UK with dual accreditation in palliative medicine and clinical oncology. She graduated from medical school in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1985 and gained experience in respiratory medicine and HIV medicine in Newcastle, Manchester and London. She was formally trained in Palliative Medicine attaining entry to the specialist register for Palliative Medicine in 1995. Dr Mulvenna then trained in Clinical Oncology and was appointed a Consultant Clinical Oncologist in 2000.
Prior to taking up her consultant post, Dr Mulvenna spent time as a Clinical Fellow at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto – within their Palliative Radiation Oncology Programme.
Dr Mulvenna’s main aim as an oncologist remains that of striving to optimise not only the duration but also the quality of life for patients, hence her role as UK Chief Investigator for the QUARTZ trial, published in the Lancet in 2016. She has a keen interest in training and is working less than full time, having retired and returned to work in February 2021.
