Dr Mhairi Donnelly qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 2008, and joined the team in Newcastle as a consultant liver specialist working in 2020.
She trained in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, undertaking subspecialty hepatology training in the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit. Dr Donnelly is an NHS hepatologist, with an interest in acute liver injury and acute liver failure, liver transplantation and palliative care in liver disease.
Dr Donnelly also performs upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. She is an active member of the BASL (British Association for Study of the Liver) Special Interest Groups for acute liver failure and end of life.
Research
Dr Donnelly’s research interests include acute liver failure and liver transplantation.
She is currently completing a research degree in the field of acute liver failure and is involved in a European registry for patients with acute liver failure, studying the epidemiology, management and outcomes of patients with this rare condition.
