Dr Lesley Kay is a Consultant Rheumatologist at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital specialising in Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Arthritis related to inflammatory bowel disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Dr Kay qualified in medicine from Oxford University in 1990, trained in medicine and rheumatology in the North East, with public health training in Newcastle and Cambridge.
She has been a consultant rheumatologist at the Freeman since 2000, and was Head of Service for Rheumatology (2006-2013) and Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal Services (2007-2012).
Research
Dr Kay’s research interests are in education, use of biologic drugs, quality improvement and patient safety. She has been a member of the Steering Group for the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Register for Ankylosing Spondylitis (2012) and was previously in a similar position for the BSR Biologics Register for Rheumatoid Arthritis (2000-2006).
She is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology’s Clinical Affairs Committee, Arthritis Research UK’s Clinical Studies Group for Spondyloarthritis, a Medical Advisor to the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, who gave her a “HealthCare Champion” award, and National Clinical Lead for Rheumatology for the ‘Getting It Right First Time’ Programme for NHS Improvement.
Dr Kay runs the regional specialist clinic for resistant Ankylosing Spondylitis and Psoriatic Arthritis with Dr Ben Thompson and nurse specialist Michelle Rutherford, and holds combined clinics colleagues in dermatology and gastroenterology.
