Dr Kofi Oppong is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. He graduated from Southampton University medical school in 1987, trained in Gastroenterology in the North East of England and has been a consultant in Newcastle since 1998.
Dr Oppong’s area of expertise is pancreaticobiliary medicine and he led the development of the tertiary pancreaticobiliary medicine service at the Freeman Hospital, becoming one of the busiest in the UK, providing the full range of advanced pancreaticobiliary endoscopy techniques.
He co-authored the current British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) EUS and ERCP service provision and training framework documents and European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) performance measures for EUS & ERCP. He also co-authored the NICE Gallstone and NICE Pancreatic Cancer guidelines.
Kofi was awarded the BSG Hopkins endoscopy prize in 2016 for research and innovation in pancreaticobiliary endoscopy. He is a past president of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland (2017).
