Dr Guy McGowan is a Consultant Cardiologist at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital with a major interest in heart failure, heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices and pulmonary hypertension.
Dr McGowan graduated from the Royal College Surgeons in Ireland in 1986. Post graduate training took place in Dublin, followed by a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, and Clinical Fellowship in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
He was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at th University of Pittsburgh in Section of Heart Failure and Transplantation in 1997. In 2004, he took up his present post specialising in advanced heart failure at the Freeman Hospital.
Dr MacGowan has an Honorary Readership at Newcastle University in Heart Failure with over 70 peer reviewed publications and previous and current grants from the British Heart Foundation, Heart Research UK, American Heart Association, Irish Heart Foundation and US National Institutes of Health.
