Dr Shenton is a Paediatric Malignant Haematologist and Lead for Paediatric Leukaemias at the Great North Children’s Hospital. He is also the Lead for Advanced Cellular Therapies in Children and Young People and the Great North Children’s Hospital is one of only three centres in the UK delivering CAR-T therapies for paediatric leukaemia. He is passionate about delivering optimal care for leukaemia patients and to standardise care through the use of clinical guidelines.
Initially appointed as a consultant in Leeds in 2006, he headed up the paediatric stem cell transplant service alongside his malignant haematology role. He brought his expertise to Newcastle in 2014 to workin both the BMT and leukaemia services. The decision by NHS England to designate GNCH as one of the CAR T therapy centres meant that he moved into advanced cellular therapies from BMT, setting up and developing the CAR-T service for young people alongside his leukaemia role.
Dr Shenton has developed the leukaemia service in Newcastle and has been integral into the restructuring of paediatric haematology, bringing the malignant and non-malignant services together within the department. Alongside this he has been a co-author and sub-investigator on the international MyeChild01 clinical trial in acute myeloid leukaemia. He has been an active member of the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) Executive committee and was co-author of the UK paediatric oncology guidance during COVID, which was also used internationally. He has been involved at a national level in strategic work from NICE to standardise diagnosis of malignancies and believes strongly that the best care should be delivered in a standard way across the country.
He is passionate about the charities that support the Great North Children’s Hospital and the unit and is both a member of the Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation Board and a Trustee of Children’s Cancer North.
