Dr Faye Cooles studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh where she was awarded her medical MBChB degree with Honours in 2009. She has then worked in Newcastle and throughout the North East of England while ultimately pursuing her Rheumatology speciality training.
Dr Faye Cooles also undertook a combined clinical and postdoctoral research fellowship at Arthritis Research Canada (ARC) and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada 2022-2023. This included clinical experience at the Mary Pack Arthritis Centre and Vancouver General Hospital where she had additional training in a variety of rare and common rheumatic presentations.

Special interests
Dr Cooles has a specialist interest in the management of Connective Tissue Diseases, which include for example Sjogren’s Disease, systemic lupus erythematous and systemic sclerosis.
Research
Dr Faye Cooles was awarded her PhD in 2017 by Newcastle University. She leads her own research group at Newcastle University into type 1 interferons and their role in rheumatic diseases. As well as being active in the Newcastle NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, Dr Cooles is Co-lead of the Connective Tissue Disease (CTD) workstream in the national UK NIHR/Versus Arthritis Musculoskeletal Translational Research Collaboration (UK MSK TRC).
