Dr Dipayan Mitra is a Consultant Neuroradiologist with over 18 years’ experience in the field. He has wide-ranging clinical experience with special expertise in Paediatric Neuroradiology.
He has been providing specialised opinion to clinicians in this Trust and in the Northeast region throughout his career, particularly in areas such as non-accidental head injury, paediatric neuro-metabolic disorders, paediatric neuro-inflammatory disorders and paediatric brain tumour imaging.
He is the lead Neuroradiologist in the Trust for the Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Neurogenetics and Paediatric Neuro-oncology multi-disciplinary teams as well as in the morbidity/mortality panels for paediatric non-accidental injury. Nationally, he is a member and a regular contributor to the National Neuro-genetics Club, Northern Heads Peer Review group (for non-accidental injuries) and Northern CNS Inflammatory Disorders network.
He is involved as the reference Neuroradiologist for central review of a number of national and international paediatric brain tumour trials, e.g. CNS GCTII, PNET5, SIOP HRMB, etc. He has published extensively in the field including in journals such as Lancet Neurology and Lancet Oncology. He has delivered invited lectures to courses/conferences nationally and internationally and written several book chapters.
As Honorary Senior Lecturer in Newcastle University, he has held several research grants. This includes BRC grant for SINONIMS trial on imaging biomarkers in stroke, which he led as the chief investigator. He was a co-investigator in the e TIPS study on perinatal strokes.
He has held several managerial positions, including head of the department of Neuroradiology (two terms) and Clinical Governance lead for Neurosciences.
He is the current President of the British Society of Neuroradiologists, which represents Neuroradiologists throughout UK. He has been a past Treasurer and a member of the Standards sub-committee of the same organisation. He has also been a paper-setter for Royal College of Radiologists and Neuroradiology expert in General Medical Council fitness to practice panel.
