Dr David Nylander is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with a special interest in therapeutic endoscopy.
He graduated from Newcastle University in 1988 and trained, initially in general internal medicine, and subsequently gastroenterology in the Northern Region.
He was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist at City Hospitals Sunderland in 1999 where he developed a therapeutic endoscopy service and then joined the team at the Newcastle Hospitals in 2012.
Dr Nylander’s main interest is therapeutic endoscopy. He is a member of the National Faculty of endoscopy trainers and has been involved in the development of courses in endoscopic removal of colon polyps and endoscopic management of patients admitted with acute bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract.
Dr Nylander became the Trust’s Director of Endoscopy in 2016 and since this time has led significant changes and modernisation of Newcastle’s endoscopy services.
He is Clinical Director of the North of Tyne Bowel Screening Program which is a consortium between Newcastle and Northumbria NHS Trusts and has been instrumental in the prevention and early diagnosis of colon cancer in the region, serving a population of over 800,000.
He also leads the provision of regional services for Barretts oesophagus and runs the radiofrequency ablation service for this condition.
Honours
Dr Nylander was awarded an MBE for services to health in Sierra Leone and the UK, as part of the Queen’s overseas and international birthday honours list.
