Dr Brendan Payne is dual-trained in infectious diseases and medical virology and has been a consultant since 2015. He undertook his undergraduate medical training in Nottingham and postgraduate medical and academic training in Newcastle and the Northern region.
Brendan is lead for the Newcastle High-Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) treatment centre.
He is medical lead for the North-of-Tyne MECFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) service.

Research
Brendan completed an MRC clinical research training fellowship followed by a Wellcome clinical postdoctoral fellowship. These combined clinical and laboratory research on mitochondrial complications in people living with HIV and their interplay with ageing.
Brendan’s current research includes delivery of commercial trials of vaccines and anti-viral medications as well as research on novel diagnostics for infection. He is deputy clinical lead for the Infection theme in the NIHR Newcastle HRC (HealthTech Research Centre).
