Dr Alexandra Thompson is a Consultant Cardiologist based between the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital, specialising in cardiac imaging with a particular interest in cardiac echo and valvular heart disease.
Dr Thompson is also an acute general cardiologist with dual accreditation in general medicine, who partakes on the general cardiology on call at the RVI.
Dr Thompson graduated from Newcastle University in 2005, and subsequently completed an MD re-evaluating the causes and definitions of heart failure and the value of routine cardiac MRI.
She has achieved European accreditation in cardiac MRI imaging and had the benefit of a year’s fellowship with the cardiac congenital team at Leeds General Infirmary. This allowed her to develop both adult and paediatric cardiac congenital knowledge, heart disease in pregnancy, and procedural and operative trans-oesophageal echo skills.
Dr Thompson’s current work includes specialist echo imaging (TOE, stress echo, contrast echo), specialist echo opinion for MDTs, a general cardiology clinic, and general cardiology on call.
She also supervises a number of trainees and is Clinical Governance lead for the cardiology unit at the RVI.
