Dr Albert Lim is a consultant paediatric neurologist at the Great North Children’s Hospital, RVI, Newcastle and at the NHS Highly Specialised Service.
His consultant practice includes all aspects of paediatric neurology ranging from neonates, infants, children to adolescents who have epilepsies, cerebrovascular disorders, neuromuscular disorders, inflammatory disorders, demyelinating disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, movement disorders, cerebral palsy, neuropsychiatric disorders, acquired brain injuries and headaches.
He has the expertise and the experience to manage children and young adults with these complex neurological conditions in outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, emergency departments and intensive care units.

Special interests
He also has subspecialty clinical practice at the NHS Highly Specialised Service in Rare Mitochondrial Disorders in Adults and Children. He contributes to the specialist clinical care for children with rare mitochondrial diseases at our national referral clinics in Newcastle. He also holds a Master’s in Strategic Leadership for Public Service from Northumbria University and is a Chartered Manager (CMI Level 7). His master’s degree in management focuses on investigating and reforming healthcare systems. He is passionate about improving the healthcare industry through national quantitative data analytics and co-production with service users. He also has a post-graduate qualification in clinical research and trials.
Research
Albert has built his research in the natural history of rare paediatric neurological conditions. His research interests include genotype-phenotype correlations, clinical assessment tools, outcome measures and drug trials. He has completed a PhD in translational medicine at Newcastle University and had been awarded fellowships from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Wellcome Trust. He holds grants from several funding bodies, both nationally and internationally. He has a successful track record of leading several research projects and has published original articles in prestigious international journals. Apart from maintaining one of the largest and the most productive cohorts of mitochondrial disease patients in the world, he actively supports several clinical trials (CTIMP and non-CTIMP). His seminal works have been presented at international conferences.
