Dr Alan Bagnall is a consultant interventional cardiologist specialising in interventional cardiology and renal denervation.
Dr Bagnall’s specialist clinical interest is the treatment of chronically occluded coronary arteries and acute coronary syndromes.
In addition, he performs:
- Left main stem angioplasty
- Rotablation
- Intravascular ultrasound
- OCT
- Pressure wire
He established a renal denervation service for patients with drug resistant high blood pressure.
Dr Bagnall qualified in Medicine from Leeds University before completing his research PhD and higher specialist cardiology training at Edinburgh University.
He then trained in interventional cardiology in Toronto before taking up post at the Freeman Hospital. Dr Bagnall is the Deputy Director of the North East and North Cumbria Local Clinical Research Network and is passionate about making research more accessible to patients.
Dr Bagnall’s goal is to integrate research into everyday clinical activity as a way to improve the care we offer and to ensure the latest medical developments are accessible to patients in the North East.
Research
Dr Bagnall is an active clinical researcher delivering both commercial and non-commercial NIHR portfolio studies alongside his regional and national management role within the NIHR Clinical Research Network. He has authored many highly cited papers in the field of coronary chronic total occlusions, acute coronary syndromes and vascular biology.
