Dr Abbas Khushnood is Consultant in paediatric and congenital cardiology and transplant physician at the Freeman Hospital’s Children’s Heart Unit where he specialises in congenital cardiology – paediatric and adults, transplant medicine, advanced heart failure management, mechanical circulatory support (ventricular assist devices – VAD), cardiac MRI, medical education and health Informatics.
Dr Khushnood is clinical lead for cardiac imaging, network lead for north-east region and clinical lead for national congenital heart disease audit, NICOR.
He completed his medical degree in India and post-graduation in business management from Cardiff University. Having begun his NHS career in 2007, he has trained at a number of tertiary congenital cardiac centres including GOSH, Birmingham Children’s hospital and Alder Hey Children’s hospital.
Appointed as Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle in 2018, Dr Khushnood has been the Network Lead for North-East Paediatric CHD Network (NENC-CHDN) and Clinical Lead for Cardiac Imaging since 2019. He is also Clinical Lead for National Congenital Heart Disease Audit, NICOR from 2020.
Dr Khushnood’s interests include cardiac transplantation, advanced heart failure management for failing heart including ventricular assist devices and cardiac MRI.
He is a Member of International society of Heart and Lung Transplant (ISHLT).
Research
Dr Khushnood has taken a 2-year clinical research fellowship in Cardiac MRI with University College London and Great Ormond street Hospital.
