Regent Point is home to several of our staff, including our human resources, procurement, research, community and occupational health teams.
In total up to 689 members of staff can work at Regent Point where there is also a staff canteen. Work has almost completed to upgrade key infrastructure at Regent Point as part of Newcastle Hospitals’ sustainability initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.
The gas has been switched off and the building is now powered by heat pumps and solar panels.
Newcastle Hospitals was the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency in 2019. To achieve our vision of being a global leader in sustainable healthcare we set a goal for the emissions we control to be Net Zero by 2030.
The vast majority of our controllable carbon footprint is related to the energy we use to heat and power our buildings, and so decarbonising our buildings is a key step to reaching Net Zero.
The £1.2 million project at Regent Point has been funded in part by a successful bid from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme Phase 3b.
The works involved:
- LED lights in place of less efficient fluorescent tube panels
- Heat pumps for the entire energy demand of the building – space heating and domestic hot water
- Solar panels to generate ultra-low carbon electricity
- Building management system (BMS) upgrades to allow better control of heating
The project is anticipated to save 120 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and is the first building in our estate to fully transition away from fossil fuels.
