Steve Borland is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he specialises in complex orthopaedic trauma, pelvic and acetabular fractures, post trauma limb reconstruction, deformity correction, and hip and knee arthroplasty.
In episode three Steve operates on 47-year-old Emma who has been involved in a motorbike accident and severely damaged her leg.
What made you get into this area of work?
I enjoy the challenge of the surgery which severe injuries pose. And treatment can be lifesaving.
What is your favourite part of your work?
We can get people walking again and get them back to their lives – back to work or playing sport.
What would you say to someone who is interested in progressing a similar career?
It’s hard work. Be prepared for some long days and busy nights. But it’s worth it.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Not a lot right now, as we have just had twin boys and that is taking up most of it! I like to read and go to the movies.
How was the filming?
The team were very professional especially while we were operating. It was less stressful than I thought it might be.
How to you feel about being part of the series?
I hope that it goes somewhat to show how much the team are working for the people of the north east, and also highlights some of the specialist work that we do here that really can’t be done anywhere else in the region.
