Titi Ameobi is a delivery suite core midwife at the Royal Victoria Infirmary – a role inspired by her mum who was also a midwife.
This is the first time the maternity unit has featured on Geordie Hospital – across the series we see Titi support three families as they welcome their little ones into the world.
What made you get into this area of work?
My mum used to be a midwife when we lived in Nigeria, and I loved supporting extended family members and new mums in my community when I was younger. I was always the first to offer my services and give a helping hand when needed.
What is your favourite part of your work?
The fact that no two shifts are ever the same. I enjoy the uncertainty of what the day may bring. I thoroughly enjoy meeting new women, quickly building up a rapport and being able to support them through one of the most scary but exciting times in their lives.
What would you say to someone who is interested in progressing a similar career?
Think long and hard before you make your decision. Identify the why behind your wanting to work in this field, because when the going gets tough and you have extremely busy shifts of difficult cases to deal with; it’s your why that will keep you grounded and enable you to keep going no matter what is thrown at you.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to travel, listen to sermons and music, and spend time with family and friends.
How was the filming?
I really enjoyed the filming process as most of it wasn’t as daunting as I initially thought it would be. The reality is I do my job day in and out therefore was unphased by this aspect of the filming; it was like having an additional birthing partner in the room.
The part I found more difficult was the one-to-one sessions, but the film crew were very friendly, approachable, and encouraging and were able to put any initial anxieties I had to bed almost immediately.
How to you feel about being part of the series?
I feel proud and privileged to be able to share aspects of my working life with others and give expecting families a glimpse into what they can expect if they decide to deliver at the RVI.
