What made you get into this area of work?
I like the patients and the pathology. The main thrust of vascular surgery is to improve a patient’s quality of life and it is a genuine honour to dedicate one’s working life to improving other people’s quality of life.
It is incredibly varied, one day you’re operating up in the neck and the next day you are down in the foot or in the belly – never a dull moment as a vascular surgeon.
What is your favourite part of your work?
The patients – nothing beats the north east and our vascular patients. They bring a humility and a sense of humour that keeps everyone’s spirits high despite some tough and challenging situations.
What would you say to someone who is interested in progressing a similar career?
Do it! When it comes to surgery, I do not think you will find a job that is more varied and rewarding.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am a passionate Newcastle United fan and season ticket holder. I have a young family and spend as much of my time as possible outside of work with the kids.
How was the filming?
Terrifying and enjoyable in equal measure. I think the scariest part of it was when they told me I would eventually get used to the cameras. I did not think this would be possible but by the end of the day I had genuinely forgotten they were there, meaning I was being myself. People who know me well will know why this is a potentially terrifying prospect ha ha.
How to you feel about being part of the series?
Think it was a real honour to be invited to be a part of the show. As a local lad, I am delighted to have represented my region.
I’m really proud to say I work at the Freeman Hospital and I hope we can show the rest of the country what a great service we offer to our patients.
