Following the success of the first series of Geordie Hospital, we welcomed production company Curve Media back into our hospitals last summer (2022) to follow our staff and patients for series two.
The team followed our staff inside and outside of work as they prepared for a busy shift. This series, the team also spent time with the midwives and support teams in our maternity unit at the RVI.
We know this series airs during some of the most challenging times the NHS has faced but we hope it captures the diversity of what we do across Newcastle Hospitals and gives you an insight into our NHS family.
Our thanks to everyone involved – both in front and behind the camera.
Chief Executive Dame Jackie Daniel said: “We were delighted to welcome the cameras back to Newcastle Hospitals last year, to film series two of Geordie Hospital.
“It’s a pleasure to see our extremely valued and hardworking clinical and support staff – and for the first time – our midwives, as they provide the very best care for our patients. I hope it provides a glimpse into the care and compassion that the team provide everyday. I’m very grateful to all of our staff and patients who gave their time to help make this programme. We really hope you all enjoy it.”
If you missed series one you can catch up on the Channel 4 website.
Background to the show
In 2021 – after a lot of discussion and planning – we granted production company Curve Media access to our hospitals and out staff and patients as part of a documentary series for Channel 4.
The series – Geordie Hospital – aired in January 2022 and following impressive feedback from those involved in the series both behind the scenes and in front of the camera we invited them back for series two.
The filming schedule was very tight and as with series one, the brief was to follow staff – both inside and outside of work – as they prepared for a busy shift.
Our priority during filming – as always – was to keep our staff and patients safe so the small team involved in filming rigidly followed the same safety measures of our staff wearing PPE where appropriate and doing regular covid testing while they were with us.
While we – like others in the NHS – are feeling the extraordinary pressures at the moment this series deliberately doesn’t focus on the operational – day to day – side of our Trust. The focus is on our people – our wonderful staff and patients and a warm-hearted look at what else goes on behind the scenes at Newcastle Hospitals. We hope it captures the flavour – and diversity – of what we do across Newcastle Hospitals and gives you a brief insight into our NHS family.
