Mr Phil Henman is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. Phil has worked for the Trust for 21 years, after completing his specialist training in Scotland with fellowship training in children’s orthopaedics and children’s trauma in France, Australia and London.
Tell us a bit about your role, special interests and what your role entails?
My job is in two parts. I’m an orthopaedic trauma surgeon for all ages and a children’s orthopaedic surgeon. My trauma role involves being on-call rota in major trauma centre, where as my children’s orthopaedic role involves managing children with congenital limb problems. Referrals come from all areas of the region and from paediatric specialists who work at the Great North Children’s Hospital. This means I have a range of interesting and complex group of cases.
What made you get into this area of work?
I worked with children with special needs as a student. I was inspired by a particular trainer as a registrar, who worked with children and had specific skills in paediatric trauma management.
What is your favourite part of your work / interests outside of work?
It is difficult for me to pick one area of work that is my favourite. Children’s trauma care and working as a team on complex conditions is near the top of my list. I am lucky to be in a situation where I genuinely enjoy coming to work – sad I know!
How did you find taking part in the filming?
I enjoyed taking part in the filming, the film crew were lovely. At one point I remember repeatedly saying goodnight to a theatre orderly who actually, had gone home several minutes earlier….or wobbling slowly on my bike, in order to get the ‘perfect shot’.
