Mr Ragbir has been a consultant in the trust since 2006. Prior to this, he did his post grad training in Newcastle and was a Consultant in Trinidad and Tobago. Maniram chose to work at Newcastle Hospitals, because of its reputation for excellence and also the friendliness of the local community.
Tell me a little bit about yourself – when did you start working at the Trust?
Within the trust, I am the clinical lead for the North of England Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour (Sarcoma) Service. I am also one of the Senior Head and Neck Surgeons. Nationally, I am the president elect of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). I am President elect in 2022 and will assume the presidency for 2023 and 2024.
Tell me about your role, what does it entail?
I enjoy the Sarcoma multi-disciplinary teams and having the honour of leading such an illustrious group of clinicians working towards the benefit of patients. I also enjoy the actual surgery because there is an immediate result such as the removal of cancers and reconstructing resulting defects.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy the precious time that the job affords with my family. I love sports in particular cricket, from my West Indian upbringing, and Golf whenever I can find the time for a round.
What would you say to someone who is interested in this area of work?
My advice to anyone interested in this area of work is to be prepared to work really hard for the benefits of patient, as there are no short cuts to excellence. However, I can think of no other job that gives the satisfaction of literally curing cancers and restoring the form and function of the human body. It is a pleasure for me to get up in the morning and go to work
