Isma is an ENT surgeon at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital where she treats all kinds of conditions affecting the ear, nose and throat.
Isma, 40, started working at Newcastle Hospitals in 2005 where she did her foundation and specialist training, and she has been a consultant for 2 years.
She has a particular interest in rhinology (nose and sinus problems) and anterior skull base surgery (treating conditions deep in the nasal cavity and sinuses), using non-invasive techniques as opposed to open surgery.
What’s your involvement in the series?
In this first episode, we see Isma perform skull base surgery on 76-year-old Terry to remove a non-cancerous tumour (that is damaging Terry’s eyesight) from the base of his brain through the nose.
Using a camera and special instruments, Isma teamed up with neurosurgeon Ian Coulter to remove the tumour and patch up the area operated on.
Did you enjoy filming?
Initially reticent about being filmed, Isma’s general view in life is to say yes to every opportunity that comes her way as long as it’s reasonable!
“I wasn’t too comfortable with the filming initially but once I got to know the production team, I felt a lot more relaxed – I’m glad I took part.”
What’s the favourite part of your work?
Isma says she likes the complexity of this part of the body and really enjoys seeing the significant improvement for each patient’s quality of life.
“Skull base surgery allows treatment through a less invasive approach which is better for patients. It also allows me to manage complex conditions as part of a multidisciplinary team.
“The satisfaction you feel when you’ve changed someone’s life for the better is an amazing feeling.”
Why do you enjoy working at Newcastle Hospitals?
“I enjoy working here as everyone is really friendly, helpful and basically like an extended family. I have had some fantastic mentors and colleagues here which makes me feel like I work in a supportive environment.”
What do you do in your spare time?
In her spare time, Isma enjoys hiking, Pilates and HITT training to help with stress relief and keeping fit. She practises self-reflection and meditation, enjoys travelling, interior design and spending time with her nieces and nephews.
What would you say looking to progress a similar career?
“By taking part hopefully I will send the message that surgery is for anyone who has the passion, discipline and determination to go for it, and I hope that women, particularly from the BAME community, will be inspired to pursue a career in surgery.”
