Our priority is always to deliver high quality, safe and caring services for everyone who comes to Newcastle Hospitals.
Throughout the year, we monitor performance and outcomes to make sure we meet our own priorities and commitments, as well as ensuring we are properly focused on national targets and requirements. We have a range of measures in place to do this, in particular to look at how we’re achieving against our main quality, safety, business and financial priorities.
Formal regulation of our services is carried out by the Care Quality Commission.
On 24 January 2024, the CQC published their latest report about The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Inspectors visited on a number of dates between June to September 2023. They looked at how our organisation was led and assessed some services at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital, as well as NECTAR, our regional patient transport service. They also spent some time in our cardiothoracic surgery department.
The inspectors found that overall Newcastle Hospitals’ ‘requires improvement’. They also highlighted issues with the way some services are run and that changes are required to ensure we always learn properly from issues or problems.
A focussed programme of improvement is underway, to address the report recommendations, and this will continue until we are satisfied that all of the issues raised have been addressed.
We would like to reassure patients, carers, families and the public, that the care and safety of patients remains the highest priority for everyone at Newcastle Hospitals.
The inspectors saw this and rated ‘caring’ in our hospitals as ‘good’, highlighting that staff treated patients ‘with compassion and kindness…took account of their individual needs’ and ‘provided emotional support to patients, families and carers’.
