Podiatry service - Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The podiatry service assesses, diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the feet and legs. We assess and provide treatment, advice, footwear or support to:

Relieve symptoms
Help patients maintain independence
Encourage and enable patients to care for themselves.

Conditions we treat

We treat a wide range of conditions affecting the feet and legs, including:

Movement and gait (biomechanical) conditions and sports injury
Foot ulceration and providing soft casts
Skin damage that needs pressure relief
Specialist treatment for hyperkeratosis (skin thickening)
Footwear and foot care advice
Corns and calluses
Fungal infections of the skin and nail
Nail care for thickened and ingrowing toenails
Support for people with diabetes.

We currently don’t provide verruca treatment. However, we can give advice on treatment and callus reduction.

If you live in Newcastle, you can be referred into the service by your GP.

Staff you are likely to meet

We have a variety of staff working for the podiatry service. You will be cared for by several members of staff including podiatry assistants, who are trained to deal with nail conditions and minor calluses, to highly specialised wound-care, diabetes, biomechanics and surgery specialists.

Care at home

Our podiatrists may treat you in your own homes. To receive a home visits, you will need to meet certain criteria:

You are housebound: unable to leave the house, bed-bound or need oxygen support
The podiatrist strongly advises that the patient is unsuitable to attend the clinic.

Our domiciliary care service operates between:

Monday to Friday
8.30am and 4.30/5.00pm

How to access our services

Patients can access our service by being referred by their GP.

For musculoskeletal (biomechanical) problems and nail surgery, your GP can book through choose and book, e-referral or TIMS (Tyneside Integrated MSK Service).

If your doctor refers you to us, we may assess you over the phone. This helps us decide on the most appropriate clinic location and service for you.
