From 4 December, road access and parking for the RVI emergency department (ED) and Leazes Wing will be restricted for a period of approximately 12 months.
The only access via Richardson Road will be for:
- emergency ambulances
- patient transport ambulances
- urgent maternity parking and
- very limited urgent drop off, including taxis. A maximum grace period of 10 minutes will be allowed for any non-authorised vehicles and enforcement will be in operation.
Other than the above list, there will be no car parking outside the ED and Leazes Wing entrances.
Collection of maternity patients will need to be arranged from New Victoria Wing or the dental hospital – the car park barriers have a 30 minute free grace period.
New road markings and signage will guide people arriving at the RVI by car.
Parking for the emergency department and Leazes Wing is available in the main public multi-storey and ground level car parks, accessed via Queen Victoria Road.
Additional internal signage will be installed to help people walking through the hospital from the multi-storey entrance or the main entrance of New Victoria Wing/Great North Children’s Hospital to the emergency department.
