Are you a Nurse, Midwife, or Allied Health Professional who can confidently lead a research/evaluation project and are interested in further developing your research and leadership capacity?
We are delighted to be able to offer this unique and exciting opportunity to award a focused, stand-alone Chief Nurse fellowship, with several specific work streams to lead on.
The fellowship will fund 5 days per week over a 24-month period to enable the successful fellow to work closely with the NMAHP Research Team and Executive Director of Nursing team to undertake several specific evaluations alongside identified development opportunities. This fellowship is full time (job share will be considered) and designed to enable you to develop your profile across the trust and with our university partner Northumbria University, as you lead on these discreet evaluations for us. You will be fully supported by the NMAHP Research Team and colleagues within the department of Nursing and Midwifery at Northumbria University.
As a background, at the end of July 2022 our five-year Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals Strategy was launched. As the largest collective workforce, the uniqueness of our contribution as highly specialised professionals is delivered through our shared vision of achieving local excellence and global reach through compassionate and innovative healthcare, education, and research. Our aspiration is to develop Newcastle Hospitals locally, nationally, and internationally as a centre of excellence for NMAHP leadership, education, clinical practice and academic research. To achieve this, we have identified six key priority areas:
- Improve quality and reduce patient harms.
- Develop a nursing, midwifery and allied health professional workforce strategy, plan and metrics for improvement.
- Develop leadership capacity, capability, and resilience.
- Engagement for improvement.
- Increase research opportunities and impact, whilst strengthening our academic links.
- Lead the digital healthcare agenda.
This fellowship is relevant to themes two, three and five.
There are several workstreams and evaluations you will lead as part of this unique fellowship. These are as follows:
- Your first six months will prioritise the coordination and implementation of the Self-Assessment of Organisational Research Readiness (SORT) Tool (See further information here) under the supervision of the Trust Lead for NMAHP Research.
Whilst this work is ongoing you will then prepare and start to work concurrently on:
- An evaluation of our flagship Embedded Researcher fellowship programme. (We expect this to take around 18-22 months from start to finish). You will work with colleagues in the East of England in addition to the NMAHP Research Team and Northumbria University. You will lead on protocol development, relevant approvals, data collection, analysis and write up.
- An evaluation of our current Joint Appointment partnership working process with Northumbria University. (We expect this to take around 6-8 months from start to finish) You will finalise the draft protocol and support with relevant approvals, data collection, analysis and write up.
- A wider evaluation of the NMAHP Researcher Development Institute. (We expect this to take around 18-22 months from start to finish) You will lead on protocol development, approvals, data collection, analysis and write up.
We are looking for a high calibre, autonomous, enthusiastic and conscientious individual to ensure the success of this Fellowship. In return you will be supported by leadership from and close links with Executive Director of Nursing Team, the NMAHP Research Team and Northumbria University.
Mentorship and supervision in relation to research methods, study delivery and development opportunities, including any signposting you may need will be provided by Dr Linda Tinkler (Trust Lead for NMAHP Research) and Professor Annette Hand (Clinical Academic Professor of Nursing) with additional input and support from the wider senior Nursing, Midwifery and AHP leadership team. Colleagues from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background or from the international NMAHP community are welcomed to apply and will be given tailored support and mentorship as required.
In addition to the specific discreet projects, you will have access to the following generic learning opportunities and training where required/appropriate:
- Support and mentorship from Newcastle Health Innovation Partners (NHIP), the Newcastle Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC), and the Newcastle Clinical Skills Academy to enable you to identify appropriate development opportunities, build networks, draw on perspectives beyond your current role and plan for your future career.
- Information about the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) and the NHS research landscape related to funding and development opportunities.
- Introductions to a range of resources available to support research and leadership including accessing local and regional training opportunities.
- Peer support through participation at regular meetings to discuss research progress, experiences and needs.
- Opportunities to support other NMAHP research related initiatives currently in development as part of our flagship charitably funded NMAHP Researcher Development Institute.
What we would like to see from you in return:
- Successful completion of the discreet pieces of work within the confines of the 24 month period.
- Written reports for the organisation highlighting key themes from each of the workstreams.
- Preparation of relevant journal articles and/or abstract submissions to share project outputs and your own development as a result of the fellowship where relevant
- Visibility as a role model, championing research across the trust.
- A developed plan for your next steps post fellowship.
