Staff are working to deliver high quality patient care in a sustainable way, according to the latest annual report from Shine.
Sustainable Healthcare in Newcastle (Shine) has produced its annual report for 2023/24 which is empowering staff to take action to make the trust’s services more sustainable.
The report provides information about the annual carbon footprint and the challenges the trust faces in trying to make healthcare services more environmentally sustainable within challenges such as the current financial climate.
The repost cites improvements which have been made thanks to engaged Green Champions who are supporting work to reduce emissions and improve the sustainability.
Sir Jim Mackey, chief executive of Newcastle Hospitals said: “In this report, we seek to empower staff and highlight the excellent work done to date, whilst acknowledging the challenging context we find ourselves in. All of our progress is thanks to our dedicated staff, and I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone working to ensure our patients receive the best care in an environmentally sustainable way.”
Sone of the initiatives include:
- The integrated laboratory team’s work to embed sustainability in our laboratories
- The procurement team working with suppliers to engage our supply chain on the journey to net zero
- The theatre sustainability working group trialling reusables like cloth theatre hats to reduce the environmental impact of our operating theatres
- The wasted medicines working group seeking to improve the management of medicines so that we avoid waste
- Our estates colleagues work on decarbonising our offices at Regent Point
- Green the grey biodiversity projects implemented by our staff.
