- Small samples of skin (punch biopsies) have been taken from your cervix today.
- Silver nitrate was used to control the bleeding and a small tampon inserted, please remove this in 3 – 4 hours time.
- Following removal of the tampon you may have some bleeding or dark staining (caused by the silver nitrate) for about 48 hours, so it is advisable to wear a pad to avoid damage to clothes.
- Very rarely you may experience some excessive bleeding with clots; this is not normal. Please contact:-

- Some people experience crampy abdominal pains, these should not last more than 2-3 days; you may take some simple painkillers such a paracetamol (as per the instructions on the packet). If the pain is not resolving, please contact colposcopy on the above numbers.
- You should avoid intercourse for 2-3 days.
- You will receive a letter in approximately 3 – 4 weeks informing you of your results and follow up if required.
