Mr Kenny Rankin, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Newcastle Hospitals and honorary senior lecturer at Newcastle University has been commended for showing ‘exceptional innovation’ to the field of surgical oncology.
At The Bone Idols 2024 awards ceremony, held to mark the weekend of World Cancer Day, Kenny was presented with the Researcher of the Year accolade.
The Bone Idols Awards were set-up by the Bone Cancer Research Trust in 2021 to celebrate those who show exceptional dedication to improving the lives of bone cancer patients.
Commenting on this achievement, Dr Rankin said:
“I am delighted to have won this award. It would not have been possible without many of our bone sarcoma patients who generously donate samples for research. I would also like to thank my colleagues in Newcastle who are protective of the time I have needed to carry out research at this level.”
Dr Zoe Davison, Head of Research, Information and Support at the Bone Cancer Research Trust, added:
“It is an honour to provide Mr Rankin with this well-deserved Researcher of the Year Award. Kenny is making huge strides in the improvement of surgical techniques, which we hope will have a positive and lasting impact on the way we treat bone cancer patients of the future. His work in establishing a surgical consortium of international experts is truly exceptional. By bringing so many of the brightest minds together, we can improve patient outcomes #UntilTheresACure.”
To mark the weekend of World Cancer Day, winners were announced at an awards presentation evening on Saturday 3rd February 2024 at the Queens Hotel, Leeds.
Dr Liz O’Riordan – a retired breast cancer surgeon, speaker, author, and breast cancer patient – hosted the red-carpet award ceremony and pledged her allegiance to the charity after her mother, Isobel, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in July 2022 and passed away in December 2023.
