When playing it is important that you get down on the floor and sit or lie down opposite your child…be face to face.
Why?
- It is easier to see what your child is really interested in and focused on.
- It shows your child that you are interested in what they are doing.
- It can help develop shared attention.
- It is easier for your child to look at you (although this not something we would prompt a child to do).
- It can be easier for your child to include you in your play if you’re there.
Other tips when playing with your child
- Turn off the TV – this can distract your child.
- Put your phone away – show your child you are interested in their play.
- Let your child choose a toy or activity – see our ‘Follow Your Child’s Lead’ advice sheet.
- Be animated – respond to what your child does or says.
- Try and spend at least 5-10 minutes a day on the floor playing with your child.
- Have fun!
