Pauline Elliott is a housekeeper on ward 14 at the Freeman Hospital – she initially joined Newcastle Hospitals in 1993 as a domestic and also spent time working as an auxiliary nurse before becoming a housekeeper, or as she’s also known – housemother – the only one in the trust!
Pauline features across the series and in episode 1 we see her take patient Joan for a very special trip to the hairdresser!
What made you get into this area of work?
When I started as a domestic, I said that I was only going to stay for 6 months – lo and behold 30 years later – I’m still here! I became an auxiliary nurse in 1998 which was a job I relished in every way. I had so many fabulous years in that job but injury, two hip replacements and back surgery led me to become the ward housekeeper.
What is your favourite part of your work?
I have many favourite parts to my job, but mostly it’s just being there for everyone, staff, patients and visitors alike.
It’s always nice to know that you can make a little difference to someone’s day – you get more with honey than you do with vinegar! Whether that be a cup of tea and a biscuit with a little side order of a chat or a hug, just taking the time to sit quietly with someone, or having a little sing song, they both work equally as well because no one really likes to be in hospital.
I try to make their stay as pleasant and as normal as possible.
What would you say to someone who is interested in progressing a similar career?
If I was to speak to anyone about coming into the caring profession, as I do with student nurses, volunteers and visiting staff who come to help us on the ward I’d say you need to first and foremost be kind. Imagine that the person is your mam or dad or favourite aunty.
Always treat the patient as you would your own family, this job can be very rewarding, make no mistake, it is hard work, sometimes long hours but if you can make someone feel safe and cared for you’re doing the right thing.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
When I’m not at work I enjoy being with my sisters, eating out and catching up on family news. I enjoy spending Saturdays with my daughter and her wife and I love going for a swim when I can – it’s a massive de-stressor for me.
How was the filming?
I loved filming the crew were all fab, never asking too much and not getting run over by the hydration station whilst walking backwards most of the time!
How to you feel about being part of the series?
Firstly, I was very humbled to be asked to be part of the show, so whoever it was that suggested my name thank you! I am just waiting for my invitation to the Baftas, I’ve got a nice frock in my wardrobe that can be taken out of mothballs at a moment’s notice!
My son who lives in Sweden is very excited to see his mam on the telly and my sisters are planning a Geordie Hospital opening episode wine and cheese party and my husband can’t wait to see the series!
