Dr Richard Quinton is a consultant endocrinologist at Newcastle Hospitals Trust and University Senior Lecturer at the Translational & Clinical Research Institute.
I was brought up in South London and qualified in Medicine from Cambridge University in 1988. Thereafter, I trained mainly in North-Central London, except for a year spent in The Netherlands on an Erasmus exchange programme.
I was appointed as a Consultant here in 1999 and also hold the post of Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University’s Translational & Clinical Research Institute.
I am a Fellow of the Edinburgh Royal College of Physicians, a Member of the British, European and American Endocrine Societies, and act as Treasurer to the Endocrinology Section of UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists).
I sit on the Exam Board and standard Setting Group for the UK and European postgraduate Examinations in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism.
I maintain strong links with several patient support groups, and support the role of “expert patients” in helping others to navigate healthcare pathways that are sometimes complex.
I remain active in medical research and have authored nearly 200 publications and a prize-winning doctoral (MD) thesis.
I am an internationally recognised authority in the area of Reproductive Endocrinology and have helped to draft several key national and international guidelines.
I work closely with colleagues based at Newcastle Fertility Centre and in the Northern region Gender Dysphoria Service.
I am fortunate to work with Endocrinologist colleagues who are likewise major experts in their respective fields, and find myself constantly learning new things from my regular interactions with them.
I speak Italian and French fluently and am also reasonably coherent in German and Dutch. I am married with three teenage children.
