Three teams from Newcastle were named as Finalists in the Nursing Times Workforce Awards earlier this year and fly the flag for the Trust in the following categories:
Best Employer for Diversity and Inclusion & Best Workplace for Learning and Development
An innovative Leadership Development Programme called “Maximising Your Potential” was shortlisted for these two Nursing Times Workforce categories. The collaborative initiative was led by the Newcastle Hospitals alongside NHS Arden and GEM and delivered to over 50 members of staff who identified as Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic.
The programme was designed to provide support and training for staff who would benefit from developing their skills further with the aim of creating a fair and equitable high-performance culture, and received overwhelmingly positive feedback with several participants successfully achieving promotions following completion.

Best Social Responsibility Programme
A pilot set up during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the health needs of vulnerable children and young people living in homeless accommodation has also been shortlisted for an award.
The pilot deployed school health nurses from Newcastle’s 0-19 service who would normally be seeing children in schools to support families who have found themselves without a home during an extremely traumatic time in their lives.
These children and young people would not normally be seen by the 0-19 service unless there were safeguarding concerns or additional health needs yet it quickly became clear that many of these young people did have health needs which were not being met.

Overseas Nurse of the Year
One of Newcastle’s inspirational nurses from overseas has been shortlisted for a Nursing Times Workforce Award celebrating the immense success of her senior clinical educator role welcoming new nurses from overseas.
Clinical Educator for internationally recruited nurses Audrey Tapang relocated from the Philippines to pursue a new start in life with the Newcastle Hospitals in 2015 and began her nursing career in cardiothoracic intensive care.
Since taking on the role of clinical educator to support regular intakes of fellow international nurses through the OSCE preparation process she has more than met the challenge, welcoming and supporting scores of nurses who have made the life-changing decision to move overseas, choosing Newcastle as their new home.

Nursing Times Workforce Summit and Awards 2022
The Nursing Times Workforce Summit and Awards aims to bring together peers to tackle current workforce challenges as well as recognising best practice from organisations that have made a positive impact to the profession.
The awards recognise the brightest talent in workforce planning and highlights those making a difference in recruitment, staff retention, wellbeing and inclusion.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, taking place on Tuesday 22 November 2022 at the Hilton London Metropole.
