Before surgery
Our ENT service includes a pre-admission assessment service to help young surgery patients understand more about their stay and make their time in hospital less daunting.
Our paediatric nurse practitioner and staff nurse assess children before surgery.
We also have play specialists who use play and games to help younger children understand why they are in hospital. Play specialists are available to help prepare your child for their operation.
The nurse practitioner will assess your child’s health and take a past medical history to ensure your child is as fit as possible for their surgery and anaesthetic.
We can help your child to be prepared in a way they can understand through seeing and playing with hospital equipment, and learning through play.
Visiting the ward before being admitted will help children to return happier and more confident.

Conditions we treat
We provide services to treat common childhood ENT complaints such as:
- persistently runny or blocked noses
- breathing problems
- throat infections
- nasal speech
- snoring.
This might include procedures such as:
- Glue ear surgery
- Tonsil surgery
- Hearing loss
These are often caused by recurrent infections, such as colds, adenoidal problems, an allergic lining of the nose (called rhinitis), or allergies such as hayfever.
We also care for children who suffer from airway and food passage problems, whether it’s persistent hoarseness, coughing and drooling.
The paediatric nurse practitioner also delivers treatment to children in the ENT outpatients department, including:
- dewaxing of ears
- nasal cautery
- assessing sore throats for a routine tonsillectomy.
Hearing problems
For hearing problems, our children’s audiology service provides hearing assessments for children.
We also deliver more specialised treatment for less common conditions such as neck tumours, and sinus and neck infections.
