Mr Alrawi has 20 years’ experience in the field of Plastic Surgery. His early career began in Dublin in 2000, where he is now a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He continued his training at the Imperial College London where he obtained an MSc and diploma in Surgery in 2003. He joined the Newcastle Trust as a trainee in 2003 and progressed through the Plastic Surgery national training program to complete his specialist higher surgical training. This culminated in a prestigious Training Interface Group Fellowship in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery in Sheffield NHS and Private Hospitals. He is a dual certified fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in the UK and Ireland, as well as a fellow of the European Board of Plastic Surgery (EBOPRAS). Mr Alrawi has been a Consultant Plastic Surgeon since 2012. He is also a full member of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Mr Alrawi is a core member of the Specialist Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, and is the surgical lead for the melanoma skin cancer service. Mr Alrawi is responsible for the development of the Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) service for melanoma at this trust. This service, provided since 2015, is available to melanoma patients in the North East of England.
SLNB is a procedure recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for melanoma patients who meet the recommended criteria. There are a number of advantages in using this technique; it has been shown to be an accurate staging modality, providing patients with important prognostic information to help guide further treatment.
Mr Alrawi has also developed a number of other surgical services, which he provides at this trust. These include the surgical Hidradenitis Suppurativa service, as well as the Nerve and Muscle Biopsy service for neurological and rheumatological conditions. He is also the lead surgeon performing perineal and perianal reconstruction following anorectal cancer surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
