Dr Ruairidh Martin is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Freeman Hospital with a specialist interest in heart rhythm disorders and implanting cardiac devices.
Dr Martin studied at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge, graduating with a BA in Physiology. He completed his medical training at the Oxford University Medical School graduating BMBCh followed by Cardiology training in South-East Scotland and the North East of England, specialising in cardiac rhythm management.
During training in Newcastle he completed an MD at Newcastle University, examining genetic determinants of atrial fibrillation.
Following training in the UK he undertook a British Heart Foundation Travelling Fellowship at Hopital Haut-Leveque, Bordeaux, France.
Dr Martin was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist, specialising in heart rhythm disorders in 2017. His interests include catheter ablation of cardiac rhythm disorders, with a particular interest in ventricular arrhythmias and arrhythmia in congenital heart disease, and implantation of complex cardiac devices, including defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy.
Dr Martin is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, The British Cardiac Society, The British Heart Rhythm Society and the European Heart Rhythm Association.
Research
Dr Martin’s MD focussed on gene expression in heart muscle cells and genetic determinants of atrial fibrillation. His research during his travelling fellowship in Bordeaux focussed on the catheter ablation of scar-related ventricular tachycardia and ablation of ventricular tachycardia in tetralogy of Fallot.
He has undertaken research studies in Newcastle and has collaborated with researchers nationally and internationally. He has over 50 peer reviewed journal publications.
