Microvascular studies are specialist test that provide important information about the small blood vessels and corresponding tissue blood flow. These tests may help the consultant provide a diagnosis and guide treatment.
Most often it is the skin blood flow that we assess.
Microvascular measurements can also be used to help us understand how well a certain treatment has worked for you.
What is involved?
The measurements are carried out by our clinical scientists and technologists and are normally very straightforward.
Most involve the use of non-invasive optical technologies. These use light and special non-contact cameras on the skin, to assess changes in blood flow following simple challenges.
For example, mild cold or mild heat application or with lying-to-standing / treatmill exercise. There should be no side effects.
Your appointment letter will briefly describe the specific tests that will be performed during your visit and the approximate time taken to complete the test.
What do I need to do before my test?
It is important that you read and follow the relevant preparation notes given on the back of your appointment letter.
What happens to the results of the test?
A report is sent to the hospital consultant who asked us to do the test.
The results will usually be given to you at your next outpatient clinic together with any other investigations you have done.
