This may include students who have autism, learning difficulties or hearing impairment as well as a wide range of speech, language, and communication difficulties.
Aims
- Improving the speech, language and communication skills of young people in further education
- Developing young people’s functional independence skills, such as public travel and shopping
- Supporting young people in work placements and preparing for employment
The work we do includes
- Creating speech, language and communication programmes which are tailored to the individual’s needs, interests, and goals.
- Complements the Preparation for Adulthood outcomes – Employment, Independent living, Community Inclusion and Health.
- Blocks of individual therapy, consolidated by teaching/support staff and parents.
- Training and advice to teaching, support staff and work placement staff on useful strategies, including adapting communication style and vocabulary.
- Establish highly functional targets for a student’s EHCP in close collaboration with the young person, their families, and the education provider.
- Supporting in the student transition to and from further education and hopefully to employment.
The post 16 provision has helped me to improve my confidence and independence by going out into the community and doing more things by myself. This will massively help me in employment for the future. I also had the chance to practise interview questions and techniques. This has made me feel more ready and comfortable for when I will attend interviews and get a job."
POST 16 student accessing our 16-25 service
Young people may access this service if they
- Are between 16 and 25 years of age
- Have an EHCP with a specific speech and language therapy recommendation under the health section (or have a Connexions top-up)
- Are registered with a Newcastle GP
