Dr Matthew Thomas is a Consultant Paediatrician in respiratory medicine at the Great North Children’s Hospital, specialising in cystic fibrosis, long term ventilation and lung transplantation.
Having trained in Aberdeen and worked initially Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, Dr Thomas moved to the North East to complete his higher specialist training in Paediatrics and Child Health, then specialising in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine.
As well as general respiratory paediatric problems, Dr Thomas specialises in cystic fibrosis and provides outreach clinics for young patients with the condition in Darlington, Carlisle and Workington. He is also a consultant in the paediatric lung transplantation programme and the long term ventilation service.
Dr Thomas completed a PhD in Biological Sciences investigating the epidemiology of pleural infection in children. He took up an academic clinical lecturer post before being appointed as a consultant at the Great North Children’s Hospital in 2015.
Research
Dr Thomas is involved in a number of clinical and epidemiological research studies and is currently an honorary clinical senior lecturer in the Institute of Cellular Medicine, Newcastle University.
